Winter Spices .....

Oranges stuck with cloves ….. freshly grated nutmeg on stewed fruits …… cinnamon simmering in red wine. These are the lovely warm rich scents of autumn and winter but the spices are also very valuable for their therapeutic properties.

They are widely used to fight infection. Our ancestors carried pomanders filled with spices and herbs to protect against bacteria and disease, but you can achieve the same effect by using the essential oils at home. Just a few drops on your burner, topped up from time to time, not only fills the home with a delicious aroma but affords some protection against colds and flu. If you don’t have a burner just drop some on a tissue and tuck it behind a radiator.

Spices can also be used in massage, and are very good for muscle pain and poor circulation. But they can irritate the skin and so are best used by a professional.  But you can still enjoy them in your burner.
